Sports Podiatry is the treatment of foot, ankle and leg injuries by altering lower limb funtion.
These injuries include but are not limited to:
- Stress fractures
- Shin Splints
- Plantar fasciitis
- Knee injuries
- Achilles Tendonitis
- Ankle injuries
A Sports Podiatrist using high speed cameras and viewing from the sides, front and back of the athlete whilst running on a treadmill, analyses the way the foot strikes the ground and the chain of motion from the foot, knee, hip and back.
Mechanical imbalances that may lead to injuries are determined by the Sports Podiatrist.
In order to limit stress and maintain good posture the Sports Podiatrist will correctly align the lower limbs.
Various methods are used to manufacture orthotic devices which are placed in shoes, in order to obtain the correct alignment.
1) The casting method whereby an in-house workshop manufactures a custom made orthotic.
2) The digital casting method where data is captured by means of a force plate and is used in conjunction with a digital casting machine to manufacture an orthotic device. This is done immediately and the patient goes home with the orthotic.
3) The CNC method used is totally computerized where the captured data from a highly sensitive pressure plate as well as a 3-D scanner is used in conjunction with a sophisticated CAD program to design the custom made orthotic, which is then sent to a CNC milling machine for the orthotic to be milled out and this is done immediately for the patient to take home.
